about

The song is really important to me. I wrote it back in March when I was spending a lot of time in my garden planting stuff ready for summer - gardening away the fear. I was feeling particularly crappy around then and it ended up turning into this "keep your chin up" kind of song. It's really just an ode to myself. An attempt to make sense of things that were going on in my world/head at the time and a reminder to appreciate the little things that make you happy. There is a lot of me in the song. It touches on all of my favourite things. The recording process was fun, Rob really understood what I was going for. I really love the way that that sort of laid back gentleness comes across in the recording.

lyrics

In the light of the sunshine, it’s not hard to see things a little too clearly
Bright blue skies set off flashers and floaters in my eyes
They dance around my vision, mocking me, I can never hold them in my gaze
Times like these I find it helps to see the beauty in dark and dull days

When its quiet outside
When its quiet outside
And all the people have taken shelter in their rented homes and cars and not even a seagull stirs

I’m a rainy-day man
I’m a what did you say man
I’m an older young man
I’m a stuck in my head man
I’m a garden shed man
I’m an early to bed man

When I step out of my door there is nothing that I really like more than a little wet weather
And I owe it to myself to stop and appreciate the beauty in nature
Like have you ever seen the raindrops dance through the gleam of a streetlight’s soft beam?
Or heard the ricochet of hailstones on your windowsill when its cold outside

When its quiet outside
When its quiet outside
And all the people have taken shelter in their rented homes and cars and not even a seagull stirs

I’m a rainy-day man
I got carried away man
I’m an older young man
I’m a stuck in my head man
I’m a garden shed man
I’m an early to bed man

I find it hard to surmise that all these people live their lives in tandem with mine
And when I cannot see their face they still exist, don’t stop in place and they run their own race

I’m a rainy-day man
I got carried away man
I’m a younger old man
I’m a stuck in my head man
I’m a garden shed man
I’m an early to bed man

I’m a rainy-day man
I’m a what did you say man
I’m an older young man
I got carried away man
I’m a Blue Jay Way man
I can’t really stay man

I’m a rainy-day man
I got carried away man
I’m a younger old man
I’m a stuck in my head man
I’m a garden shed man
I’m an early to bed man

I’m a rainy-day man
I’m a what did you say man
I’m an older young man
I got carried away man
I’m a Blue Jay Way man
I can’t really stay man
